Storage Solutions for the Bedroom

Bedrooms are where we escape to for sleeping and relaxing, but sometimes, they can become storage rooms when we dont know where to put things. Clothes pile up on furniture and it becomes difficult to find what we are looking for.

Here are some creative ideas to make the most of the space you have.

Closets:

Maximize closet space by installing a closet organizing system. A custom designed closet can add so much storage space, but can be expensive. Less costly options are available at many department stores, such as Target. Mix and Match closet storage units are sold separately and reasonably priced. Take stock of what you need to store and decide which pieces you will need to purchase.

Use clear storage boxes to store childrens clothing according to size and age. Store it in the closet for future use or to prepare to donate or sell. They can easily be stacked and keep the clothing dust free and protected. In these boxes, they can even be stored in the basement if closet space is limited and they wont be ruined by dampness.

Use a hamper in the closet to collect clothing as children grow out of it, when its full, pack it up into a storage box.

Under the Bed:

Another option, flat plastic storage boxes made especially for under the bed are perfect for seasonal clothing when not in use or other things you dont need often, but cant bring yourself to toss. Vacuum-packed storage bags are also easily stored under a bed.

Hanging:

Hang hooks in the closet for robes and pjs for quick and easy access. A wall mounted tie rack makes grabbing a tie in the morning a breeze. Hang your purses as well. Use a hanging show rack on the back of the closet door for shoes, or slippers or other items, belts, socks, anything small you dont have to have to search for.

Shelves:

Keep clutter to a minimum by hanging whatever you can, including shelves. Wall mounted shelves for accessories keep clutter off your dressers.

Take a day to organize your bedroom storage and youll create a more serene space. Everything will be easily accessible and more apt to stay organized.

Birthstones - Associated Months

Jewelry incorporating a person's birthstone is a highly personalized and cherished gift. Here we examine the birthstone associated with each month of the year based on commonly accepted modern birthstone interpretations. Birthstones have a special quality for each of us because of the ancient meanings associated with them and they can be a stunning accessory.

Today birthstones are linked to calendar months and people enjoy wearing birthstone rings or birthstone pendants associated with the month of their birth. Throughout the many years, a lot of people have regarded semi-precious stones, among the many other gemstones, to exude a beautiful exquisiteness and even a bit of magical powers. As a matter of fact, there are those who have believed that these stones carry mystical powers which could be passed on by the stones to whoever wears it. Aside from these modern birthstones, there were many other applied birthstones such as the mystical birthstones, the traditional birthstones and the ayurvedic birthstones.

Associated birthstones are believed to bring luck and good fortune to the individuals. Not only luck but they are also believed to have significance to reflect a personality trait of the holders. Read this article to know more facts about the birthstones guarding your life.

Each month of the year is represented by a separate birthstone, each of which has its own distinct meaning. And the use of the birthstone as a symbol of good luck on one's birthday has a history which is said to stretch back as far as the first century. In 1912, the American national association of Jewellers - the Jewellers of America - created a standardised birthstone calendar which is now widely used across the world.

They make a stunning original accessory that's personal to you, so check out your birthstone today.

Air-Quality? Water-Quality? A Jaunt to Jamaica

Last week I told you about our trip to Jamaica and this is the end of the story.
If you remember, the purpose of the trip was to attend my life partner's son, Peter's, wedding. He married a wonderful California girl named Danni (short for Danielle). Peter and Danni wanted to get married in a gazebo on the beach in Jamaica. They arrived on Friday because they had a multitude of things to arrange and had to be in Jamaica for three days to establish residency. More about the wedding later.

Anyway, the wedding was scheduled for Wednesday so, to kill time on Tuesday, Peter got our whole group of ten people (counting the kids) together for a catamaran sail down the coast. Have you ever been to Jamaica? If you have, does the phrase "Dunn River Falls" fill your heart with terror. Oh, I'm exaggerating! It's probably not too bad for you younger, more athletically inclined kids. I, however, am a little longer in the tooth and a bit of a klutz to begin with! They start the tour by making you rent what they laughingly call "water shoes" for $5.00 per pair. These are like ballet slippers with grooved rubber soles to help you climb through the water. Most of the shoes I saw must have been used by Columbus when he came ashore. They were old, with smooth bottoms and, with my pair, holes on the ends of both shoes where my big toes stuck out and about three sizes to small. I should have traded my shoes in for a first aid kit.

Well, we started climbing the falls. Yes! Climbing the falls! I don't mean on stairs or an elevator alongside the falls. I mean IN the falls! Yes, you will get wet! In my case, I got soaked. You are trying to climb along from smooth stone to smooth stone, but sometimes you slip. At one point, I even went completely under. Thank the deity that I did not bring my digital camera along! Navigation was not a problem - just keep going UP! At least the water quality was great. Cool! Clean! Fresh! After all, it was kind of fun and the guides were friendly and helpful. However, they don't seem to be able to finish a sentence without the word "Mon". But it's cool, and after a few days you find yourself speaking just like the natives.

Well, here I am at the end and didn't even tell you about the wedding and our trip into town yet. Will have to get to that next week. Hang in there with me, folks, and remember your last trip to Jamaica - or your next!

Five Great Wooden Toys For Toddlers

Toddlers are such loveable little ones. Always filled with adventure and filled with enough energy to make a commercial for the little energizer bunny! It is important to fill these years with educational wooden toys to help with the child's motor skills. Hand/eye color coordination, finger dexterity, and non-sequential stacking capability can all be measured with many wooden toys.

Wooden stacking toys are a wonderful toy for toddlers. Toddlers will enjoy the bright colors and improve the hand/eye coordination with wooden stacking toys. Some of the best wooden stacking toys that I like are the hamburger and sandwich wooden stacking toys. Even some adults enjoy these good old fashioned wooden stacking toys.

Wooden building blocks are an old toy that has been a favorite by many young children. Wooden building blocks help to develop dexterity, problem-solving and reasoning skills, hand/eye coordination, color, shape, size identification and also be lots of fun. Some blocks are all natural and other blocks are different colors.

Wooden push toys are a must have toy for the little energetic toddler. Wooden push and pull toys are helpful for balance and will keep the toddler focused as they are learning to walk. These wooden toys will keep them walking and walking! Little wooden wagons are also a great toy for toddlers. These little wagons help a child learn to walk while pulling something behind and also helps the toddler learn to navigate turns while walking and pulling a toy. Toddlers will enjoy putting all their little "goodies" in a wooden wagon and then proudly walking around pulling their little wooden wagon.

Toddlers love to make noise. One good thing about a toddler is you know where they are when you can hear them, but when it is quiet......you know that it is time to start checking things out! Another old wooden toy that toddlers love is a wooden hammer and peg set. I still have mine that I received for my first birthday. It is now setting on a shelf for display. This little set has wooden dowel rods and a wooden hammer that the child can pound and then turn the game over and start pounding again. The best one that I have seen has a small leather strap which attaches the hammer to the peg set so the hammer does not get separated. My daughter has this set at her daycare center and it is a game that is played with often. It is interesting to watch the eyes of the toddler light up when seeing their accomplishment of pounding the pegs through.

Toddlers love toys, but just having a toy is not enough. Make it an educational, wooden toy and learn to bring out the creativity in your child with a unique, wooden toy!

Dearfoams Women's DF591 Slipper

This microfiber scuff from Dearfoams will make your feet happy on cold mornings. An embroidered floral design and thick padding make it as pretty as it is comfortable. Securely stitched to the soft upper, the flexible sole offers light traction.
Customer Review: Sizing is really bad on these
I have worn Dearfoams scuffs for years, bought in local stores. I did notice that the soles on these appear thicker than on the older ones, and ordered my usual size (8). I could barely squeeze me foot into them width-wise, and when I did, they were also too short. I returned them and ordered the size 9. Well, they are fine in the length but they are still really tight. I'm going to keep them in the hopes they further stretch out, but buyer beware: they seem to be sized really narrow.

Yes, summertime is in full swing. There's one thing that strikes terror in the new mom...the thought of putting on a bathing suit in public! As much as you might like to, you can't stay indoors all summer or hide inside while your family and friends enjoy the sunshine. So here are a few tips to help you make the most of swimsuit season:

1. Choose a bathing suit that is most flattering to your figure. If you just had your baby, this is probably your maternity swimsuit and that's okay. Just tell yourself this is a time of transition and know that you'll be able to get back in your old suit soon. Use a cover up when you're not in the pool. A sarong wrap that ties around your waist and covers up that post-baby belly works great.

2. Don't focus on the way your body looks. You don't have to look like a Victoria Secret model - hardly anyone does! Focus on having fun with your friends and family. Remember that almost every woman in the pool or on the beach feels conscious about her body too.

3. Set a goal for yourself to get back into your pre-baby bathing suit. Why not use that pesky bathing suit as incentive? It may take several months, but make it your goal to put your old bathing suit on next season. Take the angst you feel about your post-baby body and turn it into fresh fuel for working out and eating healthy.

And if you decide to get a new bathing suit:

Don't spend much money on your swimsuit unless you're at your goal weight. You'll only wear that swimsuit a few times, and then it will end up in the giveaway pile when you lose those pounds!

Lastly, I wouldn't advise trying on bathing suits at the store with your husband in the dressing room. I did that once and it was utterly depressing and humiliating!

Okay moms, now you're ready to dive in with confidence!

Dearfoams Men's USC Clog

Customer Review: CAQREFUL - What is show is not what is delivered!
What is shown is not what is delivered. Clogs are actually shown, but what is delivered (with the same part number) are just cheap terry slippers with a plastic bottom, the kind you can get at Target for $6.

Frustrated by the over-commercialization of the holiday season? Overwhelmed by rising costs and dwindling income? Not only do we see people spending money that they cannot afford around the holidays we also see people become nicer, more giving. It is easy to feel annoyed when we see people "into" the spirit of being a nice person for this short period of time only. A lot of talk and a lot of noise along with the pressure to buy, buy, buy - others find the holidays a time of additional stress because they are alone.

Many of us dream of attaining a simpler lifestyle and we can see the demand by all the information posted online and the newsletters on living a more simplistic or sustainable life. Use your favorite search engine to find them to find a myriad of articles, books and two positive radio programs that will help you in your journey.

Families are now going back to earlier traditions of making gifts by hand rather than buying them (plates of goodies, crafts, art, dried arrangements, dried or processed vegetables, herbs and jams from their gardens, etc). Some are making the most of family fun during the holidays by creating treasure hunts (as opposed to wrapping the gifts) - which is good for environment because it reduces waste. Many families are taking on environmental themes in their holiday gift giving by choosing gifts that will benefit the recipient and the environment.

Another sure way to break the blues is to make someone else's life a little brighter. Do you have a relative or neighbor that finds it difficult to wrap gifts? Help them with the task or purchase some reusable gift bags and boxes for them to use. Individuals and groups of friends can volunteer at several places around their community, if only for an afternoon; check with the local volunteer office if you are looking for places that need a hand.

Occasionally look through your closets, pantries, library shelves and storage areas for things that have not been used in the last couple of years or items you longer wish to own. Choose one section of the home at a time if you have a lot to go through. Donate the items to the less fortunate through food kitchens, shelters for the homeless, women's support centers and missions. Send books to the library and your local literacy programs - and don't forget to drop off items to thrift stores that raise funds for charities or hospitals.

If you have a few dollars to spare, even $20 would do, take the family down to the local grocery or pet shop and try to get as many items as you can for that money. Go down as a group and donate them to a food bank or animal shelter. If you can, try to purchase one item per family member as a donation for the food bank every time you go shopping. Even one can of tuna a week can make a world of difference.

Some families have taken on the task of repairing broken toys purchased at garage sales and thrift shops, which they then donate to others during the holidays. Perhaps you have a talent at a craft such as knitting mittens and slippers that you can use to help others.

Creative ideas like these are guaranteed to take the blues right out of your season, while getting the family involved in your community. Doing various holiday activities gets us out of our houses and into some fresh air. Living a more frugal and simplistic life encourages bonding between family and friends. Meanwhile we are able to make a measurable difference in our community. These kinds of ideas bring more life, adventure and love to us all for an extended period of time - they are memories and legacies that will last a lifetime.

Dearfoams Women's Acrylic Pile Platform Slipper

The softness of the Acrylic Pile platform slipper from Dearfoams is so unbelievable that you'll have to pinch yourself to know it's true. This cozy slipper has a cushioned insole, a rounded toe, a sure-grip rubber sole which is ideal for light outdoor wear and is also machine washable.
Customer Review: Unhappy
They didn't have a size chart to let you know what sm, med, lg, ex-lg, meant, so I ordered the medium and they were too small. I ordered a different color in the same size (med, which was an 8)and they were bigger for some reason, so I had to switch with my daughter. They were sooo soft and felt like walking on air at first, but about a week later the cushion is gone and it's like wearing covered flip flops now. I would not recommend.
Customer Review: Cushy!
I brought these slippers for my wife as a joke but it turns out that she like them alot. Their cushy and fluffy but they keep your feet really hot! Their about a 1/2 size too small so given your foot size go a 1/2 size bigger. But a good buy anyway.

Certainly a class on its own, an embodiment of style and fashion, and terribly expensive. These are probably the most appropriate phrases to use when describing those expensive designer shoes that, every so often, come out of the fashion world.

Women, generally, seem to be more attracted to shoes and are more likely to buy a pair than men. According to retail and consumer expert, The NPD Group, women in the United States spent about $17 billion on fashion footwear between October 2004 and October 2005, a clear 10% increase from the previous year's record.

Base on the same study, it was found out that handbags and footwear have completely replaced clothes as women's choice to showcase their personal taste, status, wealth and style.

Truth, when items are expensive chances are manufacturers used the highest quality materials possible which makes them more durable and would definitely last longer than the cheaper ones. However, there are times that the high price of a shoe is due to some uncommon, unconventional or unique material integrated into the shoe's design, like the $2 million stiletto sandals created by known designer Stuart Weitzman.

The pair of shoes has a total of 55 carats of clear diamonds and one big 5-carat stone decorated into the straps of the shoes. Another pair that Weitzman designed was a pair of ruby stiletto sandals inspired by the ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz. The pair was made by weaving platinum threads and inserting 642 rubies on the straps. The pair amounted to a cool $1.6 million, definitely not something that you could wear everyday. Really, sometimes the price of these designer shoes are already bordering on the absurd.

Years before, a $200 pair of shoes were considered as already expensive and for the high and mighty. Nowadays, prices for a more "practical" and "normal" pair of expensive designer shoes usually range from $500 to $15,000 depending on the materials used.

Italian leather is considered as the best leather in the world for making shoes and would certainly mark up the selling price of any pair of shoes by a considerable amount. Women shoes that are made from pure Italian leather and fashioned by highly skilled Italian craftsmen can easily fetch a price of more than $1000. Usually, shoes made from exotic skins like crocodile, alligator, snake and ostrich skins are the most expensive pairs that you'll find in boutiques, malls and shoe shops.
